Introduction
TIMRAN, in collaboration with the Christian Democratic Party of Norway, organized a discussion forum on the after-effects of the 6th National Election of Ethiopia, Good practices, constructive approach, and challenges towards women’s participation in election with political parties and Civil Society Organizations on December 18, 2021, at Kuriftu Resort and Spa, Bishoftu. Eyerusalem Solomon, Executive Directress of TIMRAN, welcomed participants and stated the importance of learning from the previous election so that the upcoming election can be more inclusive through collaborative efforts. Then, H.E. Birtukan Mediksa, Chairwoman of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), delivered the opening remarks and stressed the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders. After the opening remarks, Mahlet Abraham, Program Director (EHRDC), presented a paper on, “Women Political Participation: Legal Framework, Challenges, and Opportunities”. This paper kicked off a discussion session among participants moderated by Bilen Asrat, Vice-Chair of TIMRAN Executive Board. Participants shared their personal experiences and way forward with other participants. Finally, Commissioner Meskerem Geset, Chairwoman of TIMRAN Executive Board, shared her closing remarks stressing the need for a collaborative approach among stakeholders to ensure women’s meaningful and active participation in the political arena.
